Born into one of Mali's most distinguished griot families, the singer Hawa Kasse Mady is the daughter of the vocalist and national treasure Kasse Mady Diabate and is poised to become a star of the international stage like her father, performing the repertoire that has been passed on to her by her family.
Hawa, whose pure voice has been compared by some to the American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, is the singer for the newly formed group Da Kali, along with legendary balafon player Lassana Diabate and ngoni bass player Mamadou Kouyate (son of the ngoni star Bassekou Kouyate). Having made their debut performance on the international stage at the Royal Albert Hall in August 2013 as part of the African Routes Prom, Da Kali will return to London in November to perform, along with kora maestro Toumani Diabate, at the London Jazz Festival. 2014 will see them collaborate with the Kronos Quartet in a US live project. Carthage Music has signed a worldwide publishing administration deal with Hawa Kasse Mady.
